My CD-ROM's performance is very poor, is there anything I can do to improve it?

Explanation: Your CD-ROM drive works but its performance is poor. You are finding it inadequate for using the latest games, or it is taking too long to transfer files.

Diagnosis: There are several ways to improve CD-ROM drive performance. One is simply to upgrade the drive. It's very inexpensive to upgrade a drive from 4X to 24X and it is an easy upgrade to perform in most cases as well. You can also make some configuration changes or use add-in caching software to improve performance under certain situations.

  • Make sure that you have set the drive up properly. Double-check the driver parameters and ensure that they are correct.
  • Read the instructions that come with your CD-ROM drive, particularly the nitty-gritty on the parameters to the CD-ROM driver. In many cases there are additional parameters you can add to tweak the performance level of the drive.
  • Upgrade your CD-ROM drive.
