I have a DSL modem from Verizon that I hooked a DSL router /switch /vpn to it ( netgear 814v2 ). I have the router running on 192.168.0.1.
I have a desk top phisicaly connected to the router. I can run through the router and out onto the Internet no problem. I am also running Zone Alarm Firewall Pro 4. I just added to my laptop a ( netgear USB MA111 plugin wireless ) I can connect to the router but cannot go out on the Internet.
Any help would be apriciated.

Hello [b]mcgiverohno1@ve[/v] and welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif
Tell us some more about your network configurations. Is the channel the same for router and laptop? Is the SSID the same? Are you using WEP?
One of the problems I ran into was I had to set up the IP on one machine manualy to access. This may be the case for you but there is a bit more info we need before we can help.
Good luck

I am using channel 5 on the ma111 but I will have to look at the router to see what it is using.I am using an 64 bit encryption to log to the router from the MA111.
Where do I look for the SID and what should I make it and do I do it for bothe the router and the MA111 or to bothe pc's ( Desktop and laptop)
I will be home tonight to give you a bit more info.
Thank you for replying
Still a bit confused:confused:

Before you do any changing around of you security and channel let the software that came with the router help set up the basic connection for both the desktop and wireless notebook {I hope it came with software] After that you can make changes for security .

Did the router come with any setup program?
mcgiverohno1@ve

yes the router is an MR814v2 4 port switch and router ( Netgear ) desktop pc is directly connected to the router. The router directly connected to the DSL modem. The desktop can get on the internet with no problem going through the router. BY going on the internet browser I can type in the IP and password to enter the router for configuration or setups.
Laptop is wireless and I can connect But not get out on the internet.
Laptop wireless is a MA111 USB plugin.
Thanks Mcgiverohno:confused:

I am a little lost in how to help as I used Belkin router and it came with a disc that I also stuck in notebook and away you go.
I will do a little research and post back tomorrow nite.
One other thing you can try now is letting XP [if on both, much easier] try and set up your connection
Most people don't like to use it but it can't hurt as it can be gotten rid of [ by deleting the bridge it creates].
Go to my networking places and left click setting up a home or office network
I know this is not the answer your looking for but I will see what I can find in the Morn, hopefully someone else will come along tonite.

How about connection settings in browser? Is it set to access through network? I have had the occasion where I could not access the net but could the router. Unplugging the router and modem for a minute the replug and let it go through the motions, hit internet explorer and away I go.

Is my network places missing from the desktop?
mcgiverohno1@ve
05-12-2004, 10:22 AM
yes my network olaces is on the desk top
I am starting to look at the laptop configurations
the desktop and the router work good together so it must be something with the laptop.

Choose properties
There should be a desktop tab.

I may be missing something but it looks good to me. Still havent heard what the connection settings are in IE. If you physicaly type in "http://192.168.0.1", then you will get to the router but if you try a www. address, unless connection properties are set to access through network, you will not get to the internet.
Classic, IP config is shown for both computers. Laptop shows the Netgear wireless and desktop shows the Intel Pro NIC.

If you are getting an IP addrress from the router and you are. Have you disbaled XP's firewell.
Bassman: The only reason I said the laptip is not correct is he said there is nothing under My Network Places-properties on the laptop. It can't be blank. Need Client for MS networks TCP/IP etc....
