Gmail..how to get an account ?

Hi,
I m hearing a lot about G-mail coz of its huge capacity.
I want to ask if it is "Free" ?
How to get an invitation?
Who are the persons that send invitations; and what make them has this authority ?

i read the FAQ and it seems there isn't any option to subscribe; but i can just keep myself updated on Gmail by giving them my email address.

Yesterday i recieved an invitation from a friend through email.
I completed the form as instructed; and the process succeeded.
When it asked to go to Gmail "http://gmail.google.com/gmail/", the word "LOADING..." was written on the top left corner of the browser and in the task bar "Done" was there. I waited for some while but nothing changed.
Today when i tried to go there again, the same happens every time; i.e., it takes my input (user name & password) but then the next page it displays is "LOADING...".
i m using only IE-6
Has anyone any clue to this ??
