Need help getting rid of trojan

I think my computer is infected with a trojan. Different friends of mine use my computer from time to time, and recently internet explorer's homepage has been set automatically to a search engine and will not reset after I go into tools to change it. also, a windows security center screen pops up periodically telling me I'm not protected and directing me to a av/spyware site. And, the most annoying of all is an icon in the taskbar that pops up to tell me that I may not be protected against spy ware and to click the icon to go to their site to purchase spyware products. I downloaded and scanned with AVG and ewido (I also password protected my computer and will never tell anyone the password again). They both detected and fixed a number of items, but every time I start ie, the same homepage attemps to come up. AVG blocks it and I ask avg to heal the file and it says the trojan was healed successfully, only to come up again when ie is started. I probably need a knowledgable person to look at a hjt log file. If any one wants me to post an hjt log file so they can help me out, I'd appreciate it. The name AVG gives for the trojan is Trojan horse startpage.19.AO and the infected file is c:\windows\system32\fdwle.dll

You have a little infestation going here. I'm totally exhausted or I would tackle this myself. Budfred will get to you tomorrow, I'm sure. In the mean time, dowload and unzip AboutBuster (http://www.subratam.org/main/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=19&Itemid=41). Do not run it until you are told.

The order in which things are run are critical to the prompt and effecient removal of the pests....

Looks like Budfred is tied up right now. You have one of the CoolWebSearch infections that are so popular today. :rolleyes:

To tell the truth (and I know you want only the truth ;) ) when I find a computer with this infection, I usually suggest that the user backup important data, format and reinstall. Anything CWS smacks of keyloggers and organized crime, to me. I don't know everything these programs are doing and neither do the real experts. I like to completely remove all doubt by reformating.

That being said, I have had fair success removing this hijacker and would be glad to walk you through the process. If you want to do it, download...

Install each of these programs and update them, but DON'T run them yet.

One of the problems with this infection (aka res://*****.dll/#####) is that some of the .exe and .dll files change their name on each reboot. So if we are going to do the fix you'll have to reboot your computer and post a new HJT log and then don't reboot unless you need to, to clean it up.

1- Start -> run -> type: services.msc
Stop and disable this service : Network Security Service

2- Download About:Buster.
Unzip and run it.
Check for updates, download them but do not click "Start" yet.

3- Update Ewido.

4- ControlAltDel
End the processes : atltm.exe and d3wm.exe

Reboot in safe mode.

We are all quite busy trying to keep up with the onslaught of malware infestations all over the world and it wastes time to help someone who is already being helped elsewhere...
