ok, im new to this site, and as a NUUUBBBEEE, id very much appreciate anyone who can help me with my wireless situation, anyway here is my deal.

I originally had a Westell Versalink 327W DSL wired/wireless modem, from Verizon (it came the subscription), it was good, but every now and then it would drop, so to improve my speed I got a linksys WRT54GS wireless router and setup a new wireless network using that. My first wireless network was greater, it was faster, better preformance, no drops, etc... and then i started what i always do, i tamepred with setings and stuf and tweaked stuff (i also used PCpistop optomize) and pretty soon i felt the need to (now i forgot wy tehre was some reason) make a new wireless network with a diff SSID (so i reset the router and did it wireless (um Warren that was a dumb thing to do) ok so long story short after like 5 resets and manual configurations what on earth do i have to do to COMPLETLEY RESTORE MY COMPUTER AND WIRELESS NETWORK back to how it was before i tinkered, resetting doesnt seem to help and i have systsem slowdown and browser problems.
-thank you very much... (I set this network up about a month ago so Windows Restore is like really gonna hurt so any other suggestions are greatly appreciated),
thanks again -Warren.

Hi Warren and welcome to the PcGuide forums.

How did you reset the the router? Did you use the "reset factory defaults" button in the routers control panel? That should totally reset everything on the router. Then you can setup everything from scratch.

What king of tweaks did you do to your computer? What OS? XP pro, XP home, 2000?

thank you for your post jlreich, my OS is XP and the way i reset my router is through the reset button on my router itself, one question though, when i reset my router do i have to reset the modem its connected to?

Look for the reset factory defaults in the routers control panel or similar. Every router is different on how to reset defaults. I looked up the router manual but there are several different versions, but I am assuming they are the same on this respect. But look in your manual to be sure of the correct procedure.

You normally shouldn't have to reset the modem, but it wouldn't hurt anything in order to rule it out as a problem.

Sometimes when you make certain changes on the router you will need to go into the control panel, click on network connections, r-click on the LAN icon, and click repair, in order to release/renew your IP address. You can also click start button, run, type in cmd, type ipconfig /release, then ipconfig /renew at the prompt. If it isn't able to renew then there are still configuration problems somewhere.
