I was asked to turn off my AntiVirus by SBC Yahoo as it was interferring with my internet connection. Shortly afterwards I seem to have caught a virus. When I start my computer the screen is red with a Virus Warning on the Desktop. I can barely see my icons. I turned the computer off and am afraid to turn it back on. But I do know that my personal information was sent to everyone in my address book. Ive received phone calls from friends asking why they received that info. Any ideas how to remedy this situation?:

This is the third time you have posted with malware problems and you did not finish the issue in either of the earlier two threads... If you plan to follow through this time, I suggest you do as you were asked to previously and post a HJT log... A simple description of what is happening gives us very little to work with... If you do not intend to take this through to the end, please say so and I won't waste my time on it...

I really don't think that's fair. I did as much as I could on my end before. I posted my log. I waited for a response and didn't receive one.

You were asked to report on how your computer was running and you didn't do that, so there we waited for that info... You never returned...

Now I have asked you to post a HJT log and let us know if you will follow this through to the end... You have not done so... I am willing to help if you will take it to the end... It is likely you are badly infected, so I suggest you proceed if you want my help...

Here is what I would do, step by step. I've done it before and it works fantastic, but it requires another computer with AV installed.

1. With both machines off. Connect the infected computer and a working machine with a crossover cable.

2. Boot the infected computer with a knoppix CD and start Samba services.

3. Boot the working computer and connect to the infected computer.

4. Browse to the infected filesystem and map it, say, with the letter E:

5. On the good computer, run a virus scan on E:

There are live CDs that have AV installed so that might work better if you're inclined to experiment, but I know the method outlined above works. You may need to load NTFS drivers and mount the drive in write mode, but that's not too hard if you can follow instructions.

Good luck.
