I have a desktop pc upstairs connected via ethernet cable to a wireless Netgear modem. Downstairs I have a laptop connecting wirelessly to the modem.

When using the laptop alone the connection is fine. when the upstirs PC is turned on the laptop continually dropouts. Even moving the laptop close to the modem does not fix the problem. I have tried changing the channel on the modem to no avail.

Any ideas.

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif!!

I had an episode myself where the router was fine but the modem kept losing connection whenever my air conditioning compressor would start. After I put the AC on another circuit from the mains power it no longer occurred.

You could look to see if there is a nearly overloaded circuit where the main PC and router/modem are powered from. Try powering them separately as well.

I would check to see if you have the latest firmware update.
