Key features and highlights of the LG 27GX UltraGear OLED monitor

Its standout feature is Dual Mode. At QHD, you can run the display at up to 540Hz, providing a much sharper picture while still getting an exceptionally high refresh rate. This mode makes sense when you want better visual detail without giving up the responsiveness expected from a competitive gaming monitor.

Switching to HD at 720Hz takes the opposite approach. Resolution is reduced significantly, but the monitor can refresh its image up to 720 times every second. This is aimed at competitive shooters and esports titles where players may prioritize responsiveness and motion clarity above everything else. You can switch between the two modes using a hotkey, so you don’t have to dig through menus every time you move between different types of games.

Of course, 720Hz is an extremely demanding target. Your PC needs to produce hundreds of frames per second before you can properly benefit from refresh rates this high. That’s much more achievable in lightweight competitive games at reduced settings than in modern AAA releases.

The display uses LG’s 4th-generation Primary RGB Tandem OLED technology, featuring an advanced four-stack RGB structure. Beyond improving color and contrast, the panel is designed to increase brightness while using less power than previous UltraGear OLED generations.

LG has also worked on APL and ABL behavior. OLED displays can automatically adjust brightness depending on how much of the screen is displaying bright content. Improvements in these areas are intended to keep important visual elements brighter and more consistent instead of having the overall image noticeably dim during bright scenes.

Connectivity is high-end as well. DisplayPort 2.1 provides the bandwidth needed for extremely high-refresh-rate gaming, making it an important inclusion on a display capable of reaching 540Hz and 720Hz. You also get two HDMI 2.1 ports, which are useful for connecting modern consoles and other devices, while USB-C can help simplify compatible setups with a single connection.

Is this OLED monitor worth getting?

The LG 27GX makes the most sense for a very specific type of buyer: competitive gamers with extremely powerful PCs who genuinely want to push frame rates as high as possible. QHD at 540Hz is already far beyond what most gaming monitors offer, while the optional 720Hz mode takes responsiveness even further by sacrificing resolution.

However, if you mainly play cinematic AAA games at high settings, such extreme refresh rates will largely go unused, and a higher-resolution OLED may make more sense. For serious esports players chasing maximum speed, exceptional motion clarity, and OLED image quality, however, the 27GX is a capable monitor.
