The next generation of desktop CPUs from Intel, codenamed Arrow Lake, is expected to launch under the Core Ultra 200 branding in October as the Intel 15th gen processors. This information was confirmed to Wccftech from motherboard vendors at Computex 2024 who are already prepared for the launch with Z890 motherboards. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger confirmed that these desktop CPUs will be released before the laptop versions, giving PC builders a performance upgrade sooner.
Key improvements
One of the key improvements of Arrow Lake will be the significant performance boost. The new Lion Cove P-Cores, essentially the high-performance cores responsible for demanding tasks, are expected to deliver a 14% improvement in instructions per clock over previous generations. This translates to faster processing of complex instructions, leading to smoother performance in applications like video editing and 3D rendering.
Skymont E-Cores, the energy-efficient cores that handle background tasks, are also expected to see a leap with a 38% IPC increase. This means improved responsiveness and multitasking capabilities without sacrificing battery life in laptops. Clock speeds are also rumored to be around 5.5 GHz, which would put them at the top of the charts for single-core performance.
Efficiency and TDP
Another major improvement with Arrow Lake is the focus on power efficiency. These new CPUs are expected to have a TDP that is 80% lower than Raptor Lake. TDP refers to the amount of heat a CPU generates, and a lower TDP means the CPU will run cooler and require less powerful cooling solutions. This is a welcome change for users who want a quieter and more energy-efficient PC.
Branding
Intel will also be revamping its branding scheme with the launch of Arrow Lake. Desktop CPUs will now be under the Core Ultra 200 line, signifying a new era. Unlocked SKUs, like the Core Ultra 9 285K, Core Ultra 7 265K, and Core Ultra 5 245K, will be the first to hit the market, offering enthusiasts the ability to overclock. Motherboard partners are also getting on board with the latest technology, testing out CAMM2 memory modules.
